Installing and Configuring MS DTC on W2k8 R2 Cluster

Asked 2/14/2012 5:15:28 AM by Simon

Hi

I have built  2 node failover cluster using Windows 2008 R2 Enterprise, all works fine - next step is to install MS-DTC before SQL 2008.

So, have added the DTC elements of the application role to the 2 nodes, and then went to add the DTC resource to the cluster itself.  When entering the DTC resource name (AD name) and the IP address I get an error that I don't have rights in AD to create the resource. This is not unexpected as its a large company and they only give out admin to certain containers - I anit one fo the lucky ones.

So, I raise a request to get a new computer object to be created in the correct container, and get full control rights assigned to my account, the cluster nodes and the cluster computer object.  I also get an IP address assigned and added to DNS (another request to another team !).

Try to create the DTC resource again, different error - this time its telling the resource already exists - no surprise there as i went through all the hassle of getting it created.

Question is this... If I am to use a pre-created DTC computer object in AD, should it be enabled/disabled, should it have particular rights assigning or is it simply not possible to use a pre-created object ?

Thanks

In large organizations I work with, thay ask the Windows administrators to perform this task because of security policies. You can pre-stage an Active Directory object - SQL Server and MS DTC - prior to installing it on the cluster. Just make sure that the computer object of the cluster service has permissions to update the Active Directory object.

Check out this TechNet article on how to perform this task

Many thanks for the info - a lot of good reading in there.  I will spend some time with one of my AD security team, see if I can't convince him to delgate management of the objects to me.  Then I can follow the instructions and set it up as required.
